Text Box: If, in a perfect world, every single performance by Golden Door were greeted with sold out houses, it would not relieve Golden Door of the need for fundraising. There is not a single not-for-profit performing arts company that can meet all of its expenses with ticket sales, not when expenses include the rental of a theatre space, the rental of moving equipment, marketing materials, advertising costs, stationery, etc. These are expenses for which Golden Door must raise its own funds, and at a time when funding of the arts in this city has ground to a halt. Corporations have also tightened their contributions, limiting themselves almost exclusively to large institutions with proven track records. While all of this is clearly reasonable, it also creates an unfortunate cycle: young organizations have no access to funding they need in order to produce work that would demonstrate their need for funding. Therefore all of us here are now turning to friends and family for assistance during this period of struggle. The benefits to contributors are clear. First of all, contributions to us are legal, charitable donations, deductible as such from federal income tax. Second of all, your contributions fill a need that the local and federal governments simply cannot currently meet, enabling a whole group of young artists to continue their work. On one hand, given our current events, it may seem like a trivial concern. On the other hard, art is the means by which a civilization records itself for history. Golden Door takes that responsibility very seriously indeed.   Golden Door, its officers, and the artists it represents, deeply appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide to Golden Door at this time, and thank you for your time and consideration in the matter.
